I hear a voice a'calling
[Teamwork has always been a huge mainstay as far as training exercises at UA went. Competitions were one thing, but the skill of being able to work with your fellow heroes to get yourself out of a tough spot was invaluable for anyone looking to go pro. There were certain groups of them that worked incredibly well together, and others that...didn't very well at all. As a whole it was fine, but in some situations...
Well, there was a reason that Izuku and Bakugou had been put together for their exam against the teachers, All Might specifically.
Today's task was a bit smaller on scale as far as that went, but no less challenging. Students were being split into groups of two and placed into locked cells specially reinforced by Cementoss, enhanced using various techniques with the help of the Support Department. Basically, specifically designed to be impossible to escape from using simply brute force from just one student's Quirk alone. They'd have to either work together to escape through brains...or brawn. Nothing was off-limits barring the usual "don't kill your classmate for god's sake". They had thirty minutes to get out.
So that's how Izuku ended up stuck in a box with Bakugou, feeling about as confident about their chances of escape as he had during their exam. But things had been shifting between them, ever so subtly...so he hoped that, maybe, things would be different this time.]
Kacchan- [He starts innocently enough, looking up at the completely enclosed room save for the door they entered through.] -we're probably going to have to focus our efforts on the door if we want to get out before time runs out. It's the weakest part of the room, after all, and...

I just, um...I wanted to say that you did a good job, today.
[He offers him a hesitant smile.]
That was a really good idea you had with the wall.
no subject
[Bakugo is quiet for a couple of seconds after the praise. He turns his head away from Deku with the sound of a scoff, and it'd probably be expected for him to leave then but he hesitates.]
...what was the idea you had with the door?
[He didn't actually give him a chance to talk about it, but now he thinks it might have been the better decision if it would have ended with the room in one piece.]
no subject
Izuku falters by being suddenly put on the spot, but it doesn't take him more than a handful of seconds to reply.]
The door was made of the same material as the walls so it wouldn't be too easy to just blast it open. But they had to let us in somehow...and the metal hinges were already exposed to the air. You could have melted them with your Quirk, potentially...but there's a chance that could have caused a lot more damage in the long run anyway.
no subject
[Bakugo listens to that, and he straightens up a little bit and turns to face Deku fully. It's not a terrible idea, honestly. He didn't think about the hinges but melting them...]
Melting them would have welded the door shut, idiot. We wouldn't have been able to get out normally in case of emergency and we'd probably be deducted for that.
[However..]
...but if you broke them with your Quirk, it might have caused the door to fall over instead. If you aimed with your heel instead of your toe, making a clean strike.
[He demonstrates, kicking down with his heel against the ground. With his stature he just looks like a thug about to curb stomp someone's head in or something.]
Otherwise the entire door would have fallen apart, and I would've killed you for screwing up your own stupid plan.
no subject
Wouldn't it have been okay even if the door fell apart, though? If we could still get out...that would have been less damage. What we ended up doing caused the whole room to collapse.
no subject
[Bakugo shoots a glare at Deku for that, as if he's mad at him for thinking that out. It's almost insulting-- it's like he's saying his Quirk is better by comparing the fact that breaking the door down is safer than Bakugo causing the entire room to go down.
I mean. He's absolutely right. But it still pisses him off.]
If you kick it with the full force you've been using, you might knock the whole wall down. Using your heel isn't a kick, but it's more like... AUUUGH, why am I giving you all of the answers like a teacher or something?!
Go try it out again if you're so damn curious about how it'd turn out!
[aka: lets ask if we can practice it again later when class is over]
no subject
I will. I'll make sure to try that next time too, Kacchan.
We might not have gotten full marks, but the fact we passed at all is great. We'll do a lot better next time!
no subject
Don't act like I'm your best friend now, you freaking nerd! It was just one team practice, got it?
[But his face tells him something a little different. "Don't overdo it if you don't want people prying."]
I only played along because I can't afford to fail. I still need to catch up.
[He doesn't even have his provisional license yet, after all.]
no subject
You're right. Next time, we'll probably be on different teams.
[Izuku tilts his head just slightly to one side.]
I'll make sure to beat you, then.
1/2
[It's Different now, okay. Now Bakugo is kind of maybe a little bit more tolerant towards Deku and he doesn't want it to look suspicious.....
But when Deku says that, it gets a huge grin to spread across the firey teen's face and he takes a step forward towards him and does something surprising.
He holds his hand out for a shake. Acknowledging that declaration with just a look.]
no subject
[...as if.
Before Deku can actually take his hand, he pulls it back and uses it to slap the back of Deku's head, a little bit of fire on his palm to lightly singe his hair but it surprisingly wasn't hard enough to knock him over. It was.... kind of playful???]
It'll be my win!
[The look in his eyes is different than his usual resentment. It's a look of respect. He looks at him like a proper rival, rather than a piece of shit that he can't quite rub off the bottom of his boot.]
just remember you guys asked for this
[But that wasn't important! What was important was their teamwork. Specifically, that Bakugou was working cooperatively at all, and especially with Midoriya. Even if walking up to them was punctuated by Katsuki thwapping Izuku on the head, something about the air between them was different. He didn't know why, and he didn't really care, he was just glad to see them getting along. He claps both his hands together when he's within earshot.]
Great job, both of you! Bakugou-kun, your teamwork was impeccable! I'm not sure what happened between you two when you were put on house arrest, and I certainly would never suggest you do such a thing again, but it is heartening to see you working together!
we did and i love it
[The moment Bakugo hears Iida speak, the smile on his face is gone and the look of slight respect is replaced with absolute irritation. He's the last person Bakugo wanted to talk to right now, somehow even more last than Deku, and the attention is annoying... they barely even functioned as a team in the first place.]
Shut up, you shitty Four-Eyes!
[It doesn't have as much fire and spit as it used to before, but it's still There and he's still Pissed.]
I just didn't feel like having that teacher nag me if I broke out by myself!
no subject
Thank you, Iida-kun.
[He feels a bit bad still about the whole house arrest thing, but...it was something that had to happen. Maybe someday he'll be able to explain to Iida what exactly that was all about.]
You and Tokoyami-kun did a great job too. I wasn't expecting to see your Quirk work so well with Dark Shadow, but I think you guys have most of us beat on getting out in record time.
no subject
[Maybe.]
[Probably not.]
[He turns to Izuku, still smiling, and waves his hands in bizarre gestures as he always does, the action always exacerbated by excitement.]
I may seem like a one-trick pony, Midoriya-kun, but I have many trump cards left to reveal! I can only imagine you both are the same.
no subject
[Right Kacchan]
no subject
[DAMN IT Bakugo was literally getting ready to just mosey on out of this situation-- they're having a nice friendly conversation he clearly does Not need to be here but then of course Deku has to drag him back in. The asshole.]
I'm going to beat the rest of you no matter who I'm stuck with next time!
[aka you damn right they are
He does snap his head towards Iida though to address him, a pissed look to his expression.]
Just because you got out faster than us doesn't mean you're better. Next time we'll be faster, got it?
no subject
I'm looking forward to the challenge, Bakugou-kun. Speed is my specialty, and I don't plan to be bested in it.
[Challenging Bakugou? Not the smartest move, but it seemed to be the only language he spoke.]
no subject
[A grin just spreads on Bakugo's face, and it's one of acknowledgement-- but also one of overwhelming confidence.]
Oh? That's a bold statement from Number Six.
[He's talking about the preliminary race. Of course that was a long time ago, as far as progress made before then and now goes. But it's amusing to him anyway to hear him claim that he doesn't plan to be bested after losing to Bakugo in a race.]
no subject
A race between Kacchan and Iida-kun would be so exciting! Iida-kun has the clear advantage on the ground, but Kacchan is just as fast if not faster in bursts once he's in the air...I guess it would probably depend on how long the course ended up being, and whether or not there were any obstacles to account for...
[butsubutsubutsu]
no subject
I was Number Six in the entrance exam. Things have ch-- [Oh, there goes Izuku, butsu-ing into the sun. He quirks a crooked grin, and turns back to Bakugou.]
I won't lose so easily, now that I know what I'm up against.
[This was absolutely positive. Sure, he tended to avoid their problem child of 1-A because it was easier, and he had never met a person who could quite so easily get under his skin and make him angry as Bakugou Katsuki, but that didn't mean he wasn't immensely glad to see him finally coming around and becoming a touch more personable. Even if it was... Still very much in his explosive, angry sort of way.]
